Your Career Isn't a Job List: Build the Story That Travels and Resonates

Translating public sector experience is one of the hardest parts of a career shift, and it's harder still when you know you're ready to move but don't yet know the destination. Here's the good news: you don't have to. On a resume or LinkedIn, public sector careers read as a list of titles and agencies. What disappears is the part that shows how it can help a different organization in a different space—what you're reliably good at, and the outcome or change it produced. Fix that, and your story works in any direction: private sector, nonprofit, or wherever you land.
In this hands-on 60-minute workshop, communications and change management strategist Kaitlin McCready (former comms manager/chief of staff for the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation) will teach you a repeatable method for building a career story with three parts: the trait that defines how you work, the story that proves it, and the outcome it produced. Once you've built that unit, you reframe it for whatever room you're walking into.
You'll leave with:
A framework for rebuilding your career story—a defining trait, the story behind it, and the result it produced
A one-sentence professional pitch you can say out loud
A worksheet to help you update your resume and LinkedIn profile

This is a relaxed gathering for DOE alumni with Michigan and Midwest roots. No program, no panel, no badges. Just a couple of hours to catch up with people who know what the work was actually like.
Whether you left last year or fifteen years ago, and whether you landed at a national lab, a utility, a university, a state agency, a startup, or you're still working out the next thing, you're welcome here.
The Network's birthday celebrations run through October. We're going a few days early to catch everyone while they're in town for the conference.

There'll be a sign-in sheet at the door, and we'll take a group photo that the Network may use in its newsletter or on social. No obligation to be in it.

One of the world’s premier experts on nuclear energy, Secretary Moniz will share his views on the future of fusion and fission commercial power, and the role of nuclear power in the Middle East. How close are we to commercial scale fusion? What role will new fission technologies, such as small modular reactors and molten salt reactors, play in our economy? Can these new energy sources make a real difference regarding security and climate change and how can we mitigate the “back-end” radioactive waste problem?
Come ready with questions, as this conversation will include reserved time for audience participation.

This panel brings together former DOE leaders to explore how we communicate urgent climate challenges and solutions to the next generation. What can the arts—including a children's musical and grassroots comedy—do that policy briefs and press releases cannot?
